Augusta Greys
Camp # 1956
Camp 1956 is located in New Augusta, Mississippi.

Our name was meant to pay tribute to the town of Augusta. It was a very important location in its day. Founded in 1820, it was the central location of the old Greene Charter and the location of the land grant office. If you were awarded a grant in the charter, you had to come to Augusta to claim it.

The town was quite refined for the period. In addition to the land grant office, the Perry County courthouse, the county jail / sheriff's office and an upscale hotel was also located there. A ferry and later a bridge across the Leaf River was located there. There were several business interest in the town as well. The outlaw James Copeland was tried and hanged there in 1857. It was a very busy place.

When the war came, there was at least 7 companies of troops mustered at the courthouse, including most of our ancestors. Since it was an important place and we did not want to show partiality to any particular unit that formed there, we decided on The Augusta Greys for our camp name.
